Southern Fried Lies, Oxygen’s latest true crime documentary, is serving up some southern hospitality along with a side of crime.
The new special, premiering April 27 at 6 p.m. ET/PT, delves into the mysterious death of 34-year-old Matt Jacobsa local hero in Camden, Arkansas engaged to a former beauty contestant.
Jacobs was considered one of the wealthiest men in town after winning a big settlement from surviving the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig explosion that would later inspire the Mark Wahlberg-led film Deepwater Horizon.
But when Matt’s will was discovered to have left everything to his fiancé Alex — cutting out his teenage son Jordan — his family began to question its authenticity. Authorities discovered Alex’s mom Donna Herring, described as the town’s “unofficial mayor,” forged the will, triggering an investigation into Matt’s troubling death.
As secrets were uncovered, including Matt’s covert affair, the town was rocked by more questionable deaths, kicking the rumor mill into full gear and catching the interest of law enforcement authorities.
To determine more about the strange events, Southern Fried Lies filmmakers spoke to Matt’s son Jordan, the town’s coroner and a lead FBI agent who looked into the case — along with Herring herself, who is only too eager to share her side of the story.
