Calvert was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
He denied using unreasonable force, including forcing the managainst a fence, causing him to fall to the floor, striking him with his knee, and dragging the man to a police van by his handcuffs, but was convictedof assault at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.
An accelerated misconduct hearing took place at Essex Police headquarters on Thursday (May 29), whenhe was found to have committed gross misconduct.
The 53-year-old had already resigned from the force, but it was determined he would have been dismissed if he had not already left.
Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington, who chaired the hearing, said: “There are occasions where our officers need to use force to resolve a situation and reduce the risk to the public, other officersor the person being detained.
“However, it must be reasonable, proportionate, and necessary, and officers receive training about how to do this.
“In the vast majority of occasions, this is the case, but former PC Calvert’s actions went beyond what was acceptable.
“He has been held accountable criminally, and we have now ensured he can no longer work within policing.
“The public must be confident that they will be dealt with fairly and proportionately by our officers, and we will not tolerate actions that damage that trust.”
