The Cortland Standard filed for bankruptcy in March. New ownership announces its return

The Cortland Standard newspaper, which ceased publication March 13 after filing for bankruptcy, will now resume regular publication under new ownership.

On May 8, Sample News Group, a Pennsylvania-based publishing company, announced it had acquired the assets of the Cortland Standard Printing Company through United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York.

The Cortland Standard first announced the end of its publication on March 13, citing a “declining readership and increasing costs, including an expected 25% tariff on newsprint.”

The Standard filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and the 17 remaining employees at the newspaper “packed up their offices, filed their final stories.”

Mindy Lawrence, publisher of Oswego County Media Group, will add the Cortland Standard to a group that includes The Palladium-Times, The Valley News, The Oswego Shopper, the Oswego County News and online at OswegoCountyNewsNow.com, all part of Sample News Group.

Lawrence, the previous advertising and marketing director of the newspaper, said that within days of the closure, she and the team at Sample News Group got to work on relaunching the Standard.

The first edition of the Standard was published on June 25, 1867, making it the second-oldest family-owned newspaper in New York and one of the five oldest family-owned newspapers in the U.S.

Under new ownership, the Standard will resume its prior publication schedule of Tuesday through Saturday starting May 17.
