Sheriff commends narcotics, crime suppression divisions for their work in bust

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office recently implemented what they’re calling the largest methamphetamines seizure in this history of the Augusta area.

“Over the past several months, investigators from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division have been conducting an intensive investigation into a drug trafficking organization linked to Jaquez Sturgis,” noted the sheriff’s office in a news release. “Sturgis was identified as a major distributor of large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl within the Augusta-Richmond County area.”

The drugs bust over the weekend was the culmination of a six-month investigation by the sheriff’s narcotics and crime suppression divisions. Deputies executed search warrants at addresses on the 200 block of East Hale Street, 100 block of Tybee Court and 1300 block of Marks Church Road. Investigators seized:

  • 20,100.08 grams of methamphetamine
  • 2,345.6 grams of fentanyl
  • Two firearms
  • $18,346.00 in U.S. Currency
  • One vehicle

Jaquez Sturgishas been arrested and charged with trafficking in meth and fentanyl and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and more charges are forthcoming, noted the news release.

“I want to personally thank and commend the outstanding work of our Narcotics Division and Crime Suppression Division,” said Sheriff Gino Brantley in a released statement. “This seizure is not only historic in scope, it represents lives potentially saved from fatal overdoses and communities protected from the violence that often accompanies the drug trade.

“Our goal is to relentlessly pursue those who poison our neighborhoods with these deadly substances. I could not be prouder of the tireless efforts of our investigators and every deputy involved in this operation.”

More arrests might be forthcoming as the investigation continues, noted authorities.
