The Rite Aid drug store chain has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in two years and is expected to auction off 10 York County stores.
Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday for the second time since 2023. The company initially filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2023, with plans to sell parts of its business and restructure.
The company plans to sell customer prescription files, inventory and other assets as it closes distribution centers and unloads store locations. Stores will remain open for now, but the company isn’t buying new inventory, so bare shelves are likely to become more common.
The company plans to auction off 355 stores nationwide, including 10 in York County. The local stores include locations at 818 U. S. Route 15North in Dillsburg, 4135 N. George St. Extended in East Manchester Township, 1430 and 43-47 Baltimore St in Hanover, 910 W. Broadway and 3205 Cape Horn Road inRed Lion, 4 Ballast Lanein Stewartstown, 115 Leader Heights Road, 3300 E. Market St. in Springettsbury Township and 40-43 W. Market St. in York City.
According to a WARN Notice from the State of Pennsylvania, more than 500 people were laid off from a Rite Aid corporate office located at 200 Newberry Commons in Etters as well.
According to the company’s website, Rite Aid stores will no longer accept Rite Aid gift cards or accept any returns or exchanges starting June 5.
