Omaha gang member convicted on federal drug, firearms charges

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A grand jury convicted an Omaha man on multiple charges, including drug and firearm charges, in federal court on Friday.

Clifford Wright III, 35, was charged with possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office, Wright faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison for the charges.

The release says that Wright is a documented member of the 29th Street Bloods in Omaha.

On October 31, 2022, Wright showed up at a gas station to make “hand-to-hand” transactions with a number of people in the parking lot.

After the transactions were made, shots were fired at the parking lot from across the street.

Wright exited his car with a handgun, but his weapon appeared to malfunction and did not fire. Wright then got back in his car and pursued the shooters into a neighborhood.

At the parking lot, Omaha Police found no victims, but 60 shell casings on the ground. An investigation identified Wright from two prior convictions in federal court, for which he was on supervised release at the time of the incident.

Wright was arrested on November 2, 2022.

In prison, Wright made phone calls about a “box” that investigators found to be a safe.

A search of the safe found approximately 850 fentanyl pills and three loaded handguns. One of the guns, suspected to be the one that malfunctioned at the scene, had a round in the chamber in the safe. Two of the firearms were reported as stolen.

Extracted data from Wright’s phone found that he was dealing drugs as far back as February 2022, a month after he was released from federal prison.
