Newport construction workers detained by immigration authorities

NEWPORT, Vt. (WCAX) – A group of construction workers has been detained by immigration authorities in Newport.

The Vermont Asylum Assistance Project says the 10 workers were taken into custody on Thursday. They say it was not part of a workplace raid.

In light of the recent uptick in detainments, advocates held an urgent training Friday morning for pro bono attorneys, legal workers, and interpreters to help in these immigration cases.

“If we pace ourselves and we organize and we make use of everyone’s different, complementary skills and resources. And when we use the legal tools in our system of government and our rule of law, we do prevail,” said the group’s Jill Martin Diaz.

Advocates say seven other ICE detainees were transferred from the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility and boarded a flight from Burlington to Chicago.
