Former Southern Indiana sheriff arrested on tax evasion charge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A man named in the investigation of former Clark County sheriff Jamey Noel has been arrested by Indiana State Police.

Kenny Hughbanks, the former sheriff of Scott County, Indiana, was arrested this morning and taken to the Scott County Jail in Scottsburg. He is charged with one count of tax evasion.

According to court documents, Hughbanks filed false state tax returns in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and or made a false statement in those tax returns all three years.

The investigation into Noel revealed that Hughbanks, who was formerly with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, was paid thousands of dollars for work done for CCSO as a consultant through a company he owned.

Hughbanks has been released from custody after bond was posted by his wife. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 22.
