Former Norway police officer faces charges for misconduct while employed by department

NORWAY, Mich. (WLUC) – A former Norway police officer is charged with felony misconduct that allegedly happened while he was employed by the department. Among the allegations is that he accessed women’s personal contact information through the police database.

Chad Olson, 43, of Vulcan, was arraigned in Dickinson County District Court Wednesday, according to a press release from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. Olson allegedly used the contact information he accessed through the database to flirt with women, which led to one sexual encounter with a woman while on duty in the police station.

After resigning from the Norway Police Department on Dec. 20, 2024, he also allegedly purchased a pistol without a license using his MCOLES number when he no longer had any police authority.

Olson is charged with:

  • Two counts of misconduct in office, each a 5-year felony. One count pertains to malfeasance, involving the alleged sexual conduct while on duty. The second count involves misfeasance, involving the alleged misuse of law enforcement resources.
  • One count of pistols – false statement on sales record, a 4-year felony.
  • One count of purchasing a pistol without a License, a 90-day misdemeanor.

The case was referred to the Department of Attorney General by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police. In a press release, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says those who violate their oath of office will face consequences.

“We expect law enforcement officers who take an oath to protect and serve our communities to do so with integrity,” Nessel said. “I commend the investigative efforts of the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police and remain committed to ensuring those who commit such serious dereliction of duty are held accountable.”

TV6 has emailed the City of Norway for a comment on these charges. We are also working to find out what the timeline was between the alleged acts of misconduct and his resignation in December.

Olson is scheduled for a probable cause conference on June 2 and a preliminary exam on July 1.
