Feds announce 30+ arrests connected with drug, firearm trafficking operation

The deadline is fast approaching to sign up to get a payment as part of a class action lawsuit that accused a major credit bureau of violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

TransUnion agreed to a $23 million settlement to resolve accusations that it did not correctly investigate consumer disputes of hard inquiries on their credit files or it did not remove the disputed claims.

The deadline to file a claim is June 24, 2025.

Credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate and resolve disputes within 30 days of a complaint, or 45 days if the consumer sends additional information to support their dispute, per federal law. At the end of the investigation, within five business days, consumers must be notified of the results.

“TransUnion has agreed to certain process changes regarding consumer challenges to hard inquiries that we feel are consistent with our commitment to put consumers first,” TransUnion told NJ Advance Media last month.

Consumers are included in the settlement if they received a so-called “502 Letter” from TransUnion in response to a dispute between Dec. 5, 2016 and Jan. 31, 2025, the settlement website said.

Affected consumers will automatically receive a payment of $20 to $30, depending on how many claims are submitted. But those who “experienced certain harms” because of how TransUnion handled their dispute can get up to $160 if they submit a claim onlinethe settlement website said.
