BOULDER, Colo. (KKTV) – Several people are injured after an attack near a popular mall in Boulder.
Boulder police said they responded near the Pearl Street Mall on Sunday to reports of someone setting people on fire. While they could not say how many were injured, they said several were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
A large portion of the area had to be evacuated, with police saying they were collaborating with federal authorities to secure the area and investigate.
At least one person was taken into custody, according to Boulder police. That person reportedly had minor injuries.
FBI Director Kash Patel called this a “terror attack,” saying FBI agents were on scene alongside local law enforcement. Despite that claim, though, Boulder police said they could not confirm whether this attack was targeted, nor if they could consider it an act of terrorism.
“We understand that there are a lot of tensions right now and a lot of issues in the United States and everywhere,” Boulder police said. “Once we have a clear motive, we will react accordingly, and if that motive was a group was targeted, we’ll absolutely step up and ensure that additional security, additional presence. We want people to feel safe not matter what they’re here for.”
Governor Jared Polis posted about it on social media, as well, responding to the attack.
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser called the attack a hate crime, releasing the following statement:
