The maker of a popular kitchen storage product has been accused of misleading consumers in a new class action lawsuit.
The lawsuit claims that Ziploc’s parent company, S.C. Johnson, misleads consumers by labeling its plastic bags as “microwave safe” and freezer-friendly — but using them in these ways can expose consumers to microplastics, according to AboutLawsuits.com.
A woman from California filed the lawsuit alleging that certain Ziploc bags are made with polyethylene and polypropylene, which can release dangerous microplastics under extreme temperatures, such as microwave ovens and freezers.
Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long that can be harmful to humans, the ocean, and aquatic life.
The lawsuit claims that consumers have exposed themselves to undisclosed amounts of microplastics by using Ziploc bags as they are advertised by the manufacturer.
The complain mentions a handful of Ziploc products by name, including:
- Ziploc Freezer Bags Pint/Small, Freezer Bags Quart/Medium and Freezer Bags Gallon/Large
- Ziploc Slider Freezer Bags Quart/Medium
- Ziploc Slider Freezer Gallon/Large Bags
- Ziploc Slider Storage Bags Quart/Medium
- Ziploc Slider Storage Bags Gallon/Large
- Ziploc Containers
