FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, as announced by Bishop Joseph Brennan.
This move is part of the Diocese’s ongoing efforts to address and compensate victims of clergy sexual abuse.
The filing follows the Diocese’s announcement in May of last year that it would seek court-supervised reorganization to ensure fair and equitable compensation for all victims.
The Diocese is currently facing 153 claims of abuse by clergy.
This surge in claims comes after California enacted a law that opened a three-year window for individuals to bring forward claims that were previously barred or expired.
“Our Church must address the suffering that victims of clergy sexual abuse endure. We know the sin; it will always be before us,” said Bishop Brennan.
As your Bishop, I commit to maintain the highest standards for the protection of the vulnerable and our youth and I will continue to confront allegations of abuse or any wrongdoing with diligence and care.
The Diocese of Fresno’s Office of Communications has launched a webpage providing detailed information about the bankruptcy proceedings.
The page includes published statements, a list of frequently asked questions, and links to court filings and documentation.
