Coast Guard confirms 6 dead, 2 missing after boat capsizes in Lake Tahoe’s rough waters

Six people are dead, two people are hurt and another two people are missing after a boat capsized in Lake Tahoe Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Northern California Division.

Authorities said it happened on the south side of the lake near the D.L. Bliss State Park just after 3 p.m. on June 21. The Coast Guard said the two people hurt in the boat crash were taken to a local hospital.

The Coast Guard’s response team in Lake Tahoe was called to assist the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office with 10 people who had fallen in the water off a 27-foot gold Chris-craft vessel that reportedly capsized due to a large swell. According to the Coast Guard, winds in the Lake Tahoe Basin at the time of the crash were just before 35 mph.

Callers told the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office that the group of people could be seen in the water with waves reaching heights upwards of eight feet.

The sheriff’s office will use dive and search and rescue teams Sunday morning to search for the missing two.

According to the National Weather Service, gusts were clocked at 45 mph in the South Lake Tahoe area between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Those killed won’t be identified until next of kin is notified.
