At Home shoppers in Massachusetts may soon need to find a different way to furnish their home.

On Monday, June 16, the furniture and home decor retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to economic pressures. As a result, At Home will close 26 underperforming stores across the country by Sept. 30, including two stores in Massachusetts. The news of the closures comes after the chain has already closed six stores over the past year.

Here’s how the upcoming At Home store closures will affect Massachusetts.

Why did At Home file for bankruptcy?

According to court documentsAt Home filed for bankruptcy due to rising interest rates, persistent inflation and unsustainable customs costs resulting from increased tariffs. The document also states that the company has suffered from “retail-specific market pressures,” which have caused many of the remaining stores to perform at “sub-optimal” levels.”

As part of the bankruptcy filing, ownership of At Home will be transferred to a group of hedge funds and investment firms based in New York and California.

Which At Home stores are closing in MA?

Out of the 26 closures, At Home will close two stores in Massachusetts:

  • Dedham: 300 Providence Hwy., Dedham
  • Shrewsbury: 571 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury

The chain will also close stores in California, New York, Florida, Minnesota, Washington, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Virginia, Wisconsin and Montana.

Other At Home locations in MA

After the closures this September, At Home will have two remaining locations in Massachusetts:

  • Peabody: 310 Andover St., Peabody
  • Seekonk: 1110 Fall River Ave., Seekonk

At Home also has two locations in Connecticut and one in Rhode Island.
