A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the 2003 killing of his father in Milford, investigators said Tuesday.

The Attorney General’s Office announced that Douglas Herlihy, 39, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his father Paul Herlihy, 50.

Paul Herlihy was killed inside his home in Milford between Aug. 23, 2003, and Aug. 27, 2003, investigators said. An autopsy determined that he died of blunt-force trauma.

Douglas Herlihy was arrested in Saugus, Massachusetts, and was charged with being a fugitive from justice. He is being held without bail pending extradition proceedings.

WMUR reported in 2003 that Herlihy was recently divorced and may have been trying to start a new life. He may have moved to New Hampshire in an attempt to remove his son from some of the trouble he was getting into in Massachusetts.

Hours after his father’s body was discovered in 2003, Douglas Herlihy, who was 17 at the time, was arrested in Massachusetts and accused of receiving stolen property. He was allegedly driving his father’s car.

Investigators at the time were emphatic that Herlihy’s son was not considered a suspect in his death.

Former police chief Richard Melo, who worked on cold cases during his career, said several factors could explain why it took more than 20 years to make an arrest.

“It could have been a lack of evidence at the time, it could have been there is an eyewitness or some sort of close witness that did not come forward at the time and came forward years later and gave information that was crucial to putting a case together and eventually making an arrest,” he said.

The case was investigated by the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit working with the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit.
