Time running out to claim $300 settlement payment if you own one of these refrigerators

Owners of certain Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators have a couple days left to file a claim as part of a class-action lawsuit. The settlement calls for payments of up to $300 in reimbursement depending on the age of the refrigerator and the types of repairs made to fix the problem.

The lawsuit alleges that certain Whirlpool-manufactured refrigerators offered inadequate defrosting of the evaporator in the refrigeration compartment. The issue then caused periodic build-ups of frost and ice on the evaporator, which made it difficult for the refrigerator to cool food. That problem is known as a “Frost Clog Issue.”

The refrigerators in question were manufactured from 2012 through 2019 and sold throughout the U.S. Whirpool has denied any wrongdoing in the matter, but has agreed to the settlement.

The deadline to submit a claim is Wednesday, June 18 and they can be filed via the settlement website. Class Members will need to submit the refrigerator’s model and serial numbers to determine eligibility.

As part of the settlement, qualified Class Members will receive a payment based on certain refrigerator criteria. If the appliance was purchased within the last one to three years, consumers may receive up to $300 in reimbursement for paid qualifying repairs and up to 75% of the cost to replace the refrigerator because of the issue.

If the appliance was purchased four to six years ago, the payment is up to $225 and up to 45% of the replacement cost. If the refrigerator was purchased seven or eight years ago, the payment is up to $150, but no offer is available for a replacement. Terms and conditions apply depending on the appliance and the repairs made.

The settlement was approved by a California court on May 13, however the deadline to object or opt out of the settlement was March 21.
