NEWPORT – Two people are in custody after law enforcement found a female chained up against her will on a Fertile Valley property, and a deceased man buried nearby.
According to a press release from the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s office, John L. Rosen, 48, of Newport was arrested for first degree murder, second degree murder, first degree kidnapping, first degree rape and unlawful imprisonment. Shawna L. McGlothen, 28, of Deer Park was arrested for making false or misleading statements to a public servant.
Pend Oreille County sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check on Fertile Valley Road on Thursday, June 5, at about 8:33 p.m. after a report from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Spokane deputies indicated they had taken a report of a female being held in Pend Oreille County against her will and a deceased male buried nearby on private property.
Deputies arrived on scene and contacted a male at the end of the driveway. The male escorted the deputies onto the property where the deputies found a female chained preventing her from leaving. Near where the female was located, a deceased person was found.
Rosen, McGlothen and a third individual were detained. A search warrant was obtained. The Washington State Patrol Forensics Team arrived to process the scene. A deceased adult male was confirmed to be buried on the property. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified to investigate the deceased male to determine the cause and manner of death.
The second male detained on scene was interviewed and released.
Currently, it appears all suspects in this case are in custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
“This is a very complex and ongoing investigation,” according to the press release.
“We would like to commend the quick actions from members of the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Police Department, Kalispel Tribal Police, and Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Further information will be released as the investigation continues.”
