Renters file a class action lawsuit against the owners of two Springfield affordable housing complexes

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Current and former renters at two Springfield affordable housing complexes filed class action lawsuits.

The lawsuits center around the Cedarwood Terrace and Rosewood Estates. The renters claim that the previous owners of the complexes violated provisions of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program.

The initiative offers significant tax breaks to companies that provide affordable housing. Among the alleged violations, the lawsuit accuses the previous owners of failing to notify tenants when they planned to opt out of the program. The plaintiffs also claim that provisions weren’t made to ensure rent remained low.

Renters claim that the terms of their leases changed dramatically for the worse after the complexes were sold in 2024. Due to these issues, they claim they have moved out or may be forced to do so in the future.

KY3 reached out to the defendants in the case for official comment.
