Pahalgam attack: BJP MP sparks row saying tourists should have fought terrorists and women lacked ‘warrior spirit’; apologises saying his statement was distorted

Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha Member Ram Chandra Jangra has coursy over his remarks on Pahalgam attack for saying that the women, whose husbands were killed by the terrorists, “did not have the spirit of warriors” and that’s why these women fell victim to the bullets pleading for the lives of their husbands with folded hands.

He later clarified that his statement was presented in a distorted manner to create political controversy and this mentality be shunned, adding that he still did not mind apologising for his remarks if anyone was hurt.

Mr. Jangra had made the comments at a symposium organised by his party in Bhiwani on Saturday (May 24) to mark the birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holker, the queen of Indore within the Maratha Empire.

The 75-year-old leader said if the tourists had the training, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted to impart, than three terrorists could not have killed 26 people. He said that terrorists could not have killed the husbands of our brave sisters in front of their eyes had they read the history of Ahilyabai even if they had to sacrifice their lives. He lamented that we were not told about our glorious past and only taught about one Gandhi family.

Calling Mr. Jangra’s statement, “shameful”, Congress’ communications in-charge and MP Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, demanded that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apologise for this shameful statement and expel MP Ram Chander Jangra from the party”.

“BJP leaders are constantly insulting the Indian Army and the martyrs, which exposes their petty and low mentality. This shameful statement of Rajya Sabha MP Ramchandra Jangra shows that the BJP, intoxicated with power, has become so insensitive that instead of blaming the security lapse for the sacrifice of the soldiers martyred in the Pahalgam terror attack, BJP MPs are questioning the martyrs and their wives. No action has been taken against leaders like Vijay Shah and Deora till date—now this new statement is highly objectionable. Why should the silence of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP leadership not be considered a tacit approval of these statements?” read his post.

Samajwadi Party (SP) president and former U.P. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that even the word condemnable would object to writing the word ‘condemnable’ for this disgusting statement of the BJP MP about the victimised women of Pahalgam. “Instead of worshipping women, insulting them, condemning them and exploiting and harassing them in every possible way is the real face of the BJP, which is disgusting and extremely shameful. The BJP is not a party but a swamp of anti-women mentality,” he wrote on his “X” account.

Claiming that his statement was distorted, Mr. Jangra, in a four-minute video, said he had made the comments in the context that we were only taught about the British and the Mughals in our history books, but the inclusion of the history of our great warriors after 2014 had filled our youth with a sense of bravery. “It was in this context, I said that the terrorists killed people identifying them with their religion, and had the tourists been Agniveer-trained, they would have surrounded the terrorists. There would been casualties, but the terrorists would also have been killed. I don’t think that our sisters are weak or coward. They are brave we only need to ignite the spirit of Rani Lakshmi Bai and Ahilyabai Holker in them so that they could fight in a situation like Pahalgam. Still, if anyone’s feelings are hurt I don’t mind apologising,” said Mr. Jangra.
